New evidence of Leicestershire’s climbing knife culture has emerged in official figures that show a 25 percent surge in offences.
In the past year, the total was 394. Over the five decades the common was 435 offences.
Amy Morgan, a mother from Thurnby Lodge who is campaigning for longer prison sentences for those convicted of knife crimes, said the growth in the amount of crimes was ‘shocking’.
Her 16-year-old son, Tyler Thompson, had been stabbed to death in 2015 in Freeman Road North, Leicester, by 19-year-old Pravdit Sian, who later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was imprisoned for nine decades.
She explained: “These figures are shocking and I think it is because the punishment from the courts do not match the crime.
“rsquo & The authorities;s hands are somewhat tied. They’re arresting people but the sentences the courts are handing out isn’t having a deterrent impact.
“We also have to do a lot more to educate individuals about the dangers of carrying knives. ”
Over 42,000 people have added their names to her request – that can be seen here – calling for tougher sentences for those found guilty of using a knife to attack another person or to the offence of unlawful possession of a sword.
The force’s continuing Lives Not Knives campaign aims to educate individuals, particularly young guys, about the dangers and legal implications of accepting knives.
The effort has also witnessed lots of offenders arrested and charged.
An knife amnesty has begun, allowing people to hand knives in at police stations across the county and city.
Superintendent Shane O’Neill, who is overseeing the force’s continuing Lives Not Knives campaign, said: “One episode between a knife is just one too many.
“Our officers are working every day to tackle this problem head on and bring to justice individuals who commit knife crime.
“The people have a major role to play in helping us to handling these crimes. ”
