In his first time with Monterrey’s first group, 18-year-old Jonathan Gonzalez won the Torneo Apertura’s first stage on Saturday if the Rayados conquer city rival Tigres, 2-0, to clinch the title by a five-point margin.

Monterrey, that just needed a draw scored on an own goal at the beginning of the second half of the Clasico Regio four minutes by Tigres ‘Juninho and a goal from Aviles Hurtado.

Gonzalez, who hails from Santa Rosa, California, arrived as a sub twice in midfield from the 17-round Torneo Apertura and started 14 games. Mexico’s La Liga retains playoffs and plays divide seasons.

Gonzalez along with Leon keeper William Yarbrough is going to be the sole American starters at the Liguilla, since the playoffs are famous. Some of Americans, Jose Torres and Lalo Fernandez, were on the bench for Tigres on Saturday. Rodrigo Lopez started the first nine matches to get seventh-place Toluca.

A year ago, Tijuana with six Americans on its own group won the Torneo Apertura but lost in the first round of the match, that are series.
